Bug alert: Wednesday storyhour , June 9 @ 10:30

As if there weren't enough grasshoppers and ants and beetles in our lives already...

Books

  • My Bug Book by Melissa Stewart, a board book. Just the right choice of the most familiar bugs. Great pix.
  • Butterfly, Butterfly by Petr Horacek. VERY small group (it was raining, so I sat right with them and they took in every page.
  • Very Lonely Firefly by Eric Carle. I did this using a very small but powerful flashlight in the disco light box, turning off the lights first (It's night!) At the end, I turned on my disco lights for the cloud of fireflies and that was a nice hit.  I did shorten the book to just the animals. And rephrased a bit: after I turned the disco lights on, it was a firefly party!
  • Bounce by Daniel Kirk.  An enormous board book about a pretty cute... baby spider.
  • Very Hungry Caterpillar Not available 2015 by Eric Carle, of course. I had the big book, the puppets, and the story cards.  I didn't attempt audience participation -- the babies would have eaten the food picture cards faster than the caterpillar! They were a little antsy by then.
  • Butterfly Butterly by Petr Horacek.  Very pretty, but skip a few pages next time.  Rule of six-eight.
Songs
Of course, we had to sing twinkle twinkle little star to the disco lights.

Eentsy Weentsy Spider

(This year, I passed out the little spider rings I usually give out as prizes at Halloween so that all the babies had them and we sang this. Very good.)

There's a spider on the floor, on the floor.
There's a spider on the floor, on the floor.
This is nutty for sure! To have a spider on the floor.
But there's a spider on the floor, on the floor.

Now the spider's on my knee, on my knee.
Now the spider's on my knee, on my knee.
Oh, gosh, oh gee! There’s a spider on my knee.
Now the spider's on my knee, on my knee.

Now the spider's on my tum, on my tum!
Now the spider's on my tum, on my tum!
Oh, now I’m really bummed, with a spider on my tum!
Now the spider's on my tum, on my tum!

Now the spider's on my neck, on my neck!
Now the spider's on my neck on my neck!
Oh, I'm gonna be a wreck, I've got a spider on my neck!
Now the spider's on my neck on my neck!

Now the spider's on my head, on my head!
Now the spider's on my head, on my head!
Oh, I wish that he were dead. I've got a spider on my head!
Now the spider's on my head, on my head!

There’s a spider on the floor, on the floor.
There’s a spider on the floor, who could ask for anything more?
There’s a spider on the floor, on the floor.

Luckily I had a gorgeous big spider puppet, but an oversized Halloween one would do.
